The 2026 Engine Revolution
The biggest change in 2026 is the new power unit regulations. The new hybrid engines produce a 50/50 split between the internal combustion engine and electrical power — meaning roughly 500hp from each. This is a massive increase in electrical power compared to the previous generation.
The engines also run on 100% sustainable fuel — a first in F1 history. This is part of F1's commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2030. The fuel is made from bio-waste and synthetic processes, not fossil fuels.
Smaller, Lighter, More Active
The 2026 cars are smaller and lighter than the previous generation, which had become very heavy and hard to follow closely. The new regulations introduced active aerodynamics — movable body parts that adjust automatically during a lap to reduce drag on straights and increase downforce in corners.
This is why the racing has been different in 2026. The active aero changes how the cars behave compared to what engineers knew from previous years. Some teams adapted faster than others — hence why Mercedes is leading and Red Bull is struggling.
Audi and Cadillac Join the Grid
Two manufacturer giants entered F1 for the first time in 2026. Audi — the German luxury car brand — and Cadillac — the iconic American brand — both joined the grid, bringing the total to 11 teams. This is the first time since 2016 that a new team has entered F1.
Audi acquired the former Sauber team. Cadillac built their operation from scratch with FIA approval, in a process that took years of lobbying and legal battles. Both are expected to be slow initially — as all new teams are — but represent massive long-term investment in the sport.
Because the 2026 regulations are so new, every team effectively started from zero. No one could carry over their previous car knowledge. This is the main reason Antonelli — in his debut season — is leading the championship. The playing field was genuinely reset.
I was excited for 2026 because new rules usually shake things up. I did not expect Red Bull to drop to P9 in the standings. Nobody did. But this is what makes F1 great — even the best team in the world can get it wrong when the rules change.
