What is Formula 1?

Qu'est-ce que la Formule 1 ?

The fastest, most technical, most global motorsport on earth. Here's everything you need to know.

Le sport automobile le plus rapide, le plus technique et le plus mondial. Tout ce qu'il faut savoir.

The Basics

The World's Fastest Racing Series

Formula 1 is the highest class of single-seater auto racing in the world. It is run by the FIA — the international motorsport governing body — and has existed since 1950. Every year, 20 drivers from 10 teams race across up to 24 circuits on 5 continents to win the World Championship.

The cars are the most technologically advanced racing machines ever built. They generate so much downforce they could theoretically drive upside down on a ceiling at speed. Every component is engineered to be as light and fast as possible.

The Cars

What Makes an F1 Car Special?

An F1 car weighs around 800kg (including the driver) and produces over 1,000 horsepower. In 2026, the cars use hybrid power units — a combination of a turbocharged internal combustion engine and powerful electric motors — running on 100% sustainable fuel.

They can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 2.5 seconds, reach top speeds of 350+ km/h, and brake from 300 km/h to a standstill in under 4 seconds. The G-forces on drivers are extreme — up to 5G in braking zones and high-speed corners.

The Teams

10 Teams, 20 Drivers

In 2026, there are 11 teams competing — each building their own car and entering two drivers. Teams are: Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, Alpine, Haas, Williams, Aston Martin, Racing Bulls, Audi (new), and Cadillac (new). Each team has hundreds of engineers, mechanics, and analysts working behind each car.

🎯 Willi11's Take

People ask me why I watch F1 and not just normal racing. Because there is no normal racing. F1 is in a category of its own. The cars, the strategy, the politics, the personalities — nothing comes close.

Les gens me demandent pourquoi je regarde la F1 et pas juste de la course normale. Parce qu'il n'y a pas de course normale. La F1 est dans sa propre catégorie. Les voitures, la stratégie, la politique, les personnalités — rien n'approche.
